OUR HISTORY
Originally the organization was developed
by Latino citizens from the N. Portland
neighborhoods to address specific
concerns/issues affecting families and
youth in the schools as well as the
general Latino community. At the time
several Portland school employees were
being contracted to provide outreach as
needed throughout the diverse
communities as well as translation
services by the Office of Neighborhood
Involvement (ONI). It became evident
that the various minority communities
needed to advocate for and establish
their own voice. Through dialogue, surveys, as well as organizing
forums, the needs of the community were
assessed, resources identified and
appealed for funding. Around the same time
ONI had written a grant (21st
Century) to enrich ST Johns communities.
One of the co-chairman on the 21st
Century board advocated for support
to formally organize Frente Comun. The goal for Frente Común
Board became the establishment of an organization that could provide a
leadership voice to the N. Portland
Latino communities.
Frente Común is established as a non-profit
501c3 organization that is eligible to
apply for funding as well as accept
donations. All donations are tax deductible. A
priority of Frente Común is to establish
positive working partnerships and
collaborating on
many community efforts.
